Adam's PalmPilot and Drumming Page

PalmPilot Stuff
I am an avid Palm Pilot user. I purchased a PalmPilot Professional about a year ago and have since become truly cybernetic.

It started with a Franklin organizer that my employer gave me. I never used it. I liked the idea in principle, but using one of these types of organizers seemed tedious at best. Then, one day I offered my old, unused Franklin to my wife. She excitedly accepted it, and started to use it really successfully. I was a little jealous, but I knew I would never be able to really get into using an old fasioned, bulky, notebook organizer.

Then came that fateful day at Fry's Electronics. Almost on a whim I plunked down the money for a PalmPilot Professional, a Mac connection kit, and a modem. I love gadgets, and I knew that the only way I would ever be able to use an organizer would be an electronic one. The simple, sleek look of the Pilot attracted me more than the ones with the tiny keypads (and a Newton was way more expensive).

Using the Pilot really did change my life. It hasn't made me a perfect person by any stretch of the imagination, but it has made a big impact in terms of organizing my life. I'm simply amazed by how much info can be stored in its 1MB of RAM. I have 70+ names and addresses, birthdays with alarms to go off a week ahead to give me time to get cards and presents, dozens of memos, and about eight third party applications, including a chess game and web browser! (and I still have 400k of RAM left).

This brings me to the coolest thing about the Pilot: third party applications. US Robotics (now 3Com) ingeniously made the PalmPilot platform open, so that anyone (who can program) can write their own custom applications, install them and run them on the Pilot. There is an amazing range of freeware, shareware and commercial apps for the Pilot, and even some custom hardware that plugs into the serial port. This makes the PalmPilot nothing less than a really cool, little general purpose computer.

Drumming Stuff
